GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. -- A Clay County jury voted unanimously Friday to recommend four death sentences for Gary McCray, who was convicted earlier this month of killing four people with an assault rifle in 2004.It looks like another name gets added to the roster of Florida's Death Row.
The jury returned the recommendation after less than one hour of deliberations.
The quick decision follows a morning of testimony and closing arguments in the penalty phase of the trial. The judge agreed to let McCray give his own closing statement.
"The state did not prove their case,"McCray told the jury.
The same jury found McCray guilty of killing Phillip Perrotta, 53, John Whitehead, 37, John
Oliver Ellis Jr., 51, and Robin Selkirk, 45. Prosecutors said the slayings were drug-related, as three of the four victims were arrested along with McCray in a previous drug raid at that same house.
The trial was delayed for years when McCray was not found competent to stand trial. When it finally began in July, it was interrupted several times by outbursts from McCray, who threatened and tried to fire his attorney, lectured Judge William Wilkes and repeatedly interrupted proceedings.
At least twice during the trial, McCray was removed from the courtroom by bailiffs.
Several family members of the victims testified Friday morning for the prosecution in the penalty phase of the trial.
Channel 4's Dan Leveton said that McCray's closing statement was rambling as he continued to maintain his innocence, saying the prosecution "contaminated the mind of the jury."
"I told the truth to the jury," McCray said. "I beat the state's argument on the witnesses ... I would like to ask the jury, why do you think the defendant was found guilty? Let's start with you."
Prosecutors and the judge repeatedly reminded McCray that what was relevant at this point was the penalty, not his guilt.
The jury began deliberations for a sentencing recommendation after lunch. It returned with its 12-0 recommendation of death at about 2:15 p.m.

I had to break out some troll spray for a mankey troll.McALESTER, Okla. -- Convicted killer Jessie James Cummings Jr. has been executed for the 1991 stabbing death of his 11-year-old niece.
Department of Corrections spokesman Jerry Massie said Cummings was pronounced dead at 6:11 p.m. Thursday after receiving a lethal injection inside the death chamber at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary. Source
MalcontentSTARKE - Richard Henyard was executed by lethal injection tonight as the state carried out the death penalty against the 34-year-old Lake County man for the 1993 killings of 7-year-old Jamilya Lewis and her 3-year-old sister, Jasmine. Henyard was pronounced dead at 8:16 p.m.
Henyard was put to death at Florida State Prison after a delay of about two hours while authorities waited for a final U.S. Supreme Court ruling on a last-ditch appeal. The court denied requests for a stay.
Earlier in the day, Henyard was "somewhat quiet and withdrawn, but he is respectful," said Gretl Plessinger, spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections. Source
VERMONT -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., urging them to replace cow's milk they use in their ice cream products with human breast milk, according to a statement recently released by a PETA spokeswoman.

Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, Cofounders
Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc.
Dear Mr. Cohen and Mr. Greenfield,
On behalf of PETA and our more than 2 million members and supporters, I'd like to bring your attention to an innovative new idea from Switzerland that would bring a unique twist to Ben and Jerry's.
Storchen restaurant is set to unveil a menu that includes soups, stews, and sauces made with at least 75 percent breast milk procured from human donors who are paid in exchange for their milk. If Ben and Jerry's replaced the cow's milk in its ice cream with breast milk, your customers-and cows-would reap the benefits.
Using cow's milk for your ice cream is a hazard to your customer's health. Dairy products have been linked to juvenile diabetes, allergies, constipation, obesity, and prostate and ovarian cancer. The late Dr. Benjamin Spock, America's leading authority on child care, spoke out against feeding cow's milk to children, saying it may play a role in anemia, allergies, and juvenile diabetes and in the long term, will set kids up for obesity and heart disease-America's number one cause of death.
Animals will also benefit from the switch to breast milk. Like all mammals, cows only produce milk during and after pregnancy, so to be able to constantly milk them, cows are forcefully impregnated every nine months. After several years of living in filthy conditions and being forced to produce 10 times more milk than they would naturally, their exhausted bodies are turned into hamburgers or ground up for soup.
And of course, the veal industry could not survive without the dairy industry. Because male calves can't produce milk, dairy farmers take them from their mothers immediately after birth and sell them to veal farms, where they endure 14 to 17 weeks of torment chained inside a crate so small that they can't even turn around.
The breast is best! Won't you give cows and their babies a break and our health a boost by switching from cow's milk to breast milk in Ben and Jerry's ice cream? Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Tracy Reiman
Executive Vice President

On the evening of January 30, 1993, Ms. Lewis and her daughters arrived at the Winn-Dixie. As Lewis, the eventual survivor, and her daughters, the victims, were entering the Winn-Dixie, she noticed a few people sitting on a bench near the doors. After Lewis exited the store with Jamilya, age 7, and Jasmine, age 3, she walked to her car and proceeded to place her daughters in the front passenger seat. As Lewis crossed the rear of the car to get to the driver’s side, she noticed Alfonza Smalls approaching her. As Smalls neared, he revealed a gun tucked into his waistband. Lewis and her daughters were ordered into the back of the car as Smalls and Henyard entered the front. The Lewis car left town with Henyard driving and Smalls issuing directions. Prior to the abduction of Lewis and her daughters, a female witness observed Henyard and Smalls loitering outside of the Winn-Dixie.
During the drive, Smalls repeatedly demanded that Lewis keep her daughters quiet since they were crying and upset. Later, Henyard pulled the car over at a remote area and pulled Lewis from the car. After Henyard forced her against the trunk and raped her, Smalls raped Ms. Lewis as well. Henyard told her to sit on the ground and when she hesitated, he shot her in the leg and forced her to the ground. She was also shot by Henyard three more times at close range and was wounded in the mouth, neck, and on the forehead between the eyes. After she was unconscious, Henyard and Smalls rolled her over to the shoulder of the road. Lewis survived and several hours later regained consciousness and went to a nearby house for help. The occupants contacted the police and Lewis collapsed and waited for the officers to arrive.
As Henyard and Smalls drove away from the scene of the shooting, the Lewis girls were repeatedly asking for their mother. Henyard pulled the car over after a short period of time had passed and removed the girls from the car. Henyard and Smalls took the girls further off the road and killed both Jamilya and Jasmine with a single bullet to the head. Henyard and Smalls then threw their bodies into some underbrush over a fence. Richard Henyard

HUNTSVILLE — An apologetic William Murray was executed Wednesday for raping and strangling a 93-year-old woman during a burglary of her Dallas-area home more than a decade ago.
"I'm sorry for what I did," he told two nephews of his victim who watched him through a window in the death chamber. "I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me. The Lord has forgiven me."
Murray then looked through an adjacent window where his mother and two brothers were among the witnesses and said: "I'll be there waiting for y'all, all right? God Bless."
Eight minutes later at 6:20 p.m., he was pronounced dead.

Monster JACKSON — The 20th man executed in Georgia by lethal injection took 14 minutes to die Tuesday night.Nice.
Witness described Jack Alderman’s manner as calm, almost serene, his eyes closed the entire time. For a few minutes before he was declared dead, they said he smiled.
“There was no jerking,” said Jan Skutch, a media witness from The Savannah Morning News. “He was calm. It was almost antiseptic.”
Adlerman, pronounced dead at 7:25 p.m. Tuesday, has been on death row almost 35 years — longer than any of the 109 death row inmates in Georgia. He was convicted of the 1974 Chatham County murder of wife Barbara Alderman for $10,000 in insurance money. And how peaceful was the victims death?
When that conviction was overturned by a federal appeals court, he was convicted in a second trial in 1984.
An accomplice in the murder, John Arthur Brown, beat Barbara Alderman with a crescent wrench. Then he and Alderman choked her and put her underwater in a bathtub to be sure she was dead.
Brown was paroled in 1987 and died a free man in New York in 2000.
Alderman’s attorney, Michael Seiml, said Tuesday night — after he had exhausted his last appeals to the Georgia parole board for clemency and to the U.S. Supreme Court that Alderman, 57, was a model prisoner who deserved to have his death sentence reduced to life.

I wonder how Michael Seiml justifies life in prison for a twice convicted murderer just because he was a model prisoner. There would have been no need for his execution if he had been a model citizen.
